Installation Process

Now that you’ve figured out which kitchen backsplash is right for you, you can start the installation process.  Listed below are general guidelines to help you install any backsplash in your kitchen:

Ø      Turn off the power to the area.

Ø      Remove any electrical outlet covers.

Ø      Wash the area with warm water and let it air-dry.

Ø      Spread a thin 3' x 3' layer of the tile adhesive about 1/16" thick at the center base of the backsplash.

Ø      The first tile should be placed at the center base of the backsplash.

Ø      Use a level to check your work.

Ø      Place spacers on each corner.

Ø      To correctly space all base tiles, you'll need to cut the bottom off of the spacer so it fits next to the countertop.

Ø      Add tiles flush against the spacers, working in 3' x 3' squares of adhesive so that it doesn't dry out while you're placing tiles.

Ø      To cut tiles, use a tile cutter to mark the tiles, and then use a tile saw to carefully cut the tile into the desired shape and size.

Ø      Use a damp cloth to wipe away any extra adhesive.

Ø      Mix the grout according to the instructions.

Ø      Using a rubber float, apply the grout between the tiles.

Ø      Wipe off any excess grout with a damp cloth.

Ø      Use a rounded stick to shape the grout joints.

Ø      Wipe off any excess grout with a damp cloth.

Ø      When the grout dries, use a clean cloth to wipe and dry the tiles.

Ø      Replace any electrical outlet covers.

Ø      Keep in mind you'll likely need longer screws to fit them over the new tile.

Ø      Use a latex modified thin set when installing a glass tile.  Ceramic tile substrates don’t work.
