and function.
Kitchen mosaic backsplashes are very low maintenance and
really simple to install.

$2.00 to about $15.00 a square foot and your typical backsplash

really bring your kitchen back to life, without having to take a
huge chunk out of your wallet.

will allow you to meet all your aesthetic needs without
overpaying.
Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting Your
Project
The first thing you need to ask
yourself is whether you’re totally making over your kitchen, or
just want to touch it up to make it look more
lively? You also
have to ask yourself if you’re you planning on changing the
countertops and/or other fixtures.
Whenever you do any type of
project in your home, you really need to think in the long
run. Take into
consideration future painting or flooring
projects.
It’s also important to decide on
which tile type you want to go for; whether it’s a traditional
ceramic tile, a trendy glass tile, an elegant stainless steel tile,
or a high class marble tile.
Answering these questions will
play a key role in determining what style to go with when choosing
your backsplash.
Play around with different color
combinations in your kitchen. If your fixtures are a dark tone,
than try going with a lighter tone kitchen mosaic
backsplash. This will
really give your kitchen a great open look.
So How Do I Install a Mosaic Kitchen
Backsplash?
Installing a kitchen mosaic
backsplash yourself can be a great way to save
money. Below are
some general installation tips for installing any type of
tile kitchen backsplash:
-
Turn off the power to the area, and
remove any electrical outlet covers.
-
Wash the area with warm water and
let it air-dry.
-
Use a notched trowel to spread a
thin 3' x 3' layer of the tile adhesive about 1/16" thick at the
center base of the backsplash.
-
Place the first tile at the center
base of the backsplash. Use a level to check your work.
-
Place spacers on each corner. To
correctly space all base tiles, you'll need to cut the bottom off
of the spacer so it fits next to the countertop.
-
Add tiles flush against the spacers,
working in 3' x 3' squares of adhesive so that it doesn't dry out
while you're placing tiles.
-
To cut tiles, use a tile cutter to
mark the tiles, and then use a tile saw to carefully cut the tile
into the desired shape and size.
-
Use a damp cloth to wipe away any
extra adhesive.
-
Mix the grout according to the
instructions.
-
Using a rubber float, apply the
grout between the tiles.
-
Wipe off any excess grout with a
damp cloth.
-
Use a rounded stick to shape the
grout joints.
-
Wipe off any excess grout with a
damp cloth.
-
When the grout dries, use a clean
cloth to wipe and dry the tiles.
-
Replace any electrical outlet
covers. Keep in mind you'll likely need longer screws to fit them
over the new tile.
Note: When installing glass
tiles, make sure to use a latex modified thin set in order to
properly bond to the substrate. Ceramic tile mastic won’t get the
job done.
If you’re not an experienced
“Do-It-Yourselfer”, we strongly recommend that you hire a
professional to do the work. They will do the job faster, and
create a more quality finish. After all, that is their
job.
Things to Look For When Hiring a Mosaic Kitchen
Backsplash Installer:
The first thing you should do is
check to see if they are licensed and insured. This is extremely important
incase problems arise.
You also need to ask what type of warranty and guaranty they offer.
You should also ask
them about references, and make sure to make those follow up phone
calls.
Don’t be afraid to test their
general knowledge.
With just a few simple questions, you can really differentiate the
ones who know what their doing from the ones that
don’t.
Make sure to ask for a quote
before letting them start the project. Have them break down the quote
and make sure they can account for their price. It’s normally a good idea to get
about three quotes to get a good understanding of the market
price.
Also ask them if they’re members
of any organizations.
It’s definitely a plus if they’re members of the Better Business
Bureau. The BBB is
really a prestigious club to be a part of.
